Teaching
My main objective as an instructor is to teach students how to see accurately, to understand the anatomy of the human form as it lives in space, and to translate this knowledge beautifully through painting, drawing, and sculpture. To this end, I try to do two things for my students. One is to ensure they develop technical skill in their medium of choice. Without sound technique there can be no art, and only through clear instruction can students develop the technical ability to communicate their artistic visions.
The other is to inspire students in their work and guide them on their way to becoming mature artists. this, above all, requires empathy. The road to becoming an artist can be littered with difficulty and frustration. Students want instant results and gratification but need to learn about the power of patience and persistence. A good teacher must be supportive, encouraging and honest. By nature, I am very optimistic. I believe there is always something positive to find in a situation and that every student can be given a direction they desire for their own personal success.
